In todays class we had a very brief lecture on etiquette in the workplace. We quickly went over some of the basics in how to behave in the office and this was very helpful considering we would be going on placement next year.

Studio Etiquette

We will be spending a lot of time in the workplace, so it is best to try and enjoy it and be enthusiastic. This is important as if we are enthusiastic then we will have an impact on other people around us and this will be a great thing to have. We also were told about time management, and how being on time is a great way to make a good first impression. Another way is to dress appropriately, and we can do this by getting a feel of what that specific office is doing, and we can judge it off that. Another important one is to not to get involved in office gossip, as this can’t have any positive benefit and is best when we stay out of it and stay neutral. Helping out in the practical ways such as helping with cleaning and tidying up, can have a lasting impact on people around us. This is especially the case when we clean up after ourselves as people will respect us for making an effort. Don’t be afraid of asking questions, as people will respond to it and it is better to ask questions than to hold on to them and slow things down. Other small things like making eye contact and asking before borrowing seem simple but can go a long way.

Organisation

It is very important when sharing our files and work, that we are organised in labelling our work so that other people can access it and understand it. This will help colleagues and they will appreciate if we are able to label and organise our documents and files correctly.

In this example, having good organisation is ideal for productivity. In my 1st year, my organisation of files was not good and it led to confusion, poor time management and overall, I was not as productive as I should have been.

What have I learnt?

Overall, understanding the importance of personal etiquette as well as etiquette in the workplace is a great aspect to understand as it helps with the overall efficiency within the workplace and through personal tasks.
